How can a teach first aid to 10 year olds?

I am in charge of teaching a class for boy scouts in order for them to earn their Readyman badges. I want to teach them first aid, but i don’t want it to sound gross, or scary. HELP?

You need to give them the full course regarding first aid. If you don’t how are they going to learn first aid. What you may think is "gross" may not be gross to them. At any rate they need to be taught the full course if they are every going to know about first aid with the possibility of ever having to use it and that may include a family member. Sometimes there’s more to first aid then just calling 911. They need to learn to stay calm while on the phone talking with someone if the need should ever come up. They need to know what to do when someone is bleeding from a deep cut, etc.

When teaching the course you’re going to have to remain calm if one of the l0 year old children gets grossed out. Staying calm your self will help the child to stay calm. It’s up to you to teach them to stay calm given any situation. How can you call it passing a certified first aid course when you avoid some of the important things they need to know.

If you are a mom or dad you already know that you have to stay calm in order for you child to stay calm so you can do what you need to do. Just do what you need to do, because I believe the children will be better for it even if they get grossed out or not. If they do get grossed out about some part of the course, they’ll get over it and then you and the children move on from there.

Food for thought …. how many of the children haven’t seen some kind the horror flick? I’ll bet not too many. Don’t worry they can get through just about anything.
