how do i stop possums getting in to my camping gear?

i am going camping and i will be leaving it out sid my tent in 2 garbage bags because my tent isn’t big enough for it and me i was just wondering how i could stop possums biting at it.

try peppermint oil..put it in a atomizer and spray your stuff….works on mice and deer……..maybe it will work on opposums.

  1. sid? possums are evil… although i suggest securing all food and you shouldn’t have any worries

  2. The best way to help with this at an affordable price is to just take an extra cooler and put it in there.

  3. Most of the time, you will have trouble with racoons… either way, I’ve only heard of them getting into "food" … they will even rip through a tent to get to food… I have even heard that racoons can even open the tops of cooler… the best place is to put it in your car at nights…

    good luck and enjoy…

  4. When I go camping, I take one of my ratcheting tie down straps for my truck and strap the lid to my cooler shut. This has worked against raccoons and possums. It obviously won’t work for bears, but I have other methods for that.

Most of the time animals are looking for food and are not concerned with the rest of your gear, only to the extent that they think food may be found in there. Keep your campsite neat, wash your dishes/dump your dish water away from your campsite, and secure all your food and you will be fine.

  5. Some camp sites have "animal lockers," where you place the things the wildlife is going to be most interested in. You might also rig a rope in a tree and haul the garbage out of reach of most critters. If you use a cooler, you will need some kind of lock-down for raccoons. Possums aren’t as dexterous and if they’re your only problem, just making it difficult to get to should work.
