Essential Camping Gear?

Summer is coming and I like to plan ahead.

I am planning on going camping and haven't ever really done so to be honest.

What do you think the essential camping gear you need? Other than a tent? (Any suggestions on that would be great too.)

Remember that I am on a limited budget.

Thanks!
ok let me say from the last answer that this is just a camping trip. i'm not a survivalist and were just going to have a good time.

some people take this stuff way to seriously. oy.

but for the rest, your answers are awesome!

I am assuming that you will be car camping and not backpacking. That said my information will be for car camping, though you should go backpacking at some point because it is really fun…if you like to be in nature. Depending on where you are going these things might need to be changed.

THE LIST:
1. A Cooler w/ ice
2. Some type of food (i.e. sandwich meat, bread, water, condements, hotdogs, marshmallows, graham crackers, chocolate(you gotta make smores when camping) etc.
3. Water, or a water purification system
4. antibacterial wipes
5. Tent
6. sleeping bag, or a old blanket from your house
7. Some type of sleeping mat…i perfer a self inflating mat. I use a thermarest
8. changes of socks! then undies and other clothes
9. I lighter/lighter fluid
10. Knife
11. Flashlight and lantern…lantern is not required but a good flashlight is.
12. pillow
13. Folding Chair
14. Simple first aid, w/ bandaids, peroxide, common sense stuff ya know
15. It is always nice to have a camera

Honestly this list could go on and on and on. These are basics. You won't really know what you'll need until you have actually camped.

    thats all the important stuff…..

  2. Light, light and more light. You could have the best gear in the world and it won't do any good for you if you can't see it!:) Besides flashlights (and a tent of course), you'll want to bring with you a: good pocketknife/gerber, paper towels & wet ones (they're nice), pliers, a shovel, sandals (they're nice too-depending on where yer headed), a multi-purpose tub for washing whatever, a collapsible trashcan, and a water "container" (ie, portable drinking fountain/sink-very useful!). Other than that, a "front door mat" for your tent (which helps to keep things "spic-n-span") and some tea tree oil (for any bite or burns-just don't get it near your eyes!) Just about all of these "essentials" you can find at your local Wal Mart and don't cost a fortune. Hope this helps (and be sure to HAVE FUN :)!

  4. Planning a camping trip is like a shopping list.
    1. About a Gallon of water for each person for each day, it might be more in hotter places
    2. Your shelter kit, tent, sleeping bags, wool blanket or any large blanket, pillows, tarp, extra large trash bags, zip ties, duct tape, and a space blanket.
    3. Food, hot dogs, can of beans so you can cook it right on the fire, chips, granola bars, trail mix, freeze dried bacon and eggs, you can also hunt, fish, and gather food.
    4. First aid kit, you'll want to add a bottle of aspirin, severe wound dressing, gloves, gauze, you can use duct tape as medical tape, hand sanitizer, tooth brush, toothpaste, towels, wash rags, deodorant, camp soap, etc
    5. extra change of clothing, extra socks( the go fast and you''ll want to change them more than usual), gortex coat or poncho, jacket, bandannas, stocking caps, etc
    6. tools and weapons, 12ga pump action shotgun or gun of your choice, hatchet, camp saw, fixed bladed knife, multi tool, compass, pocket knife, fishing poles and equipment, ammo, cleaning kit.
    7. car kit. Extra fuel, repair kit, tool kit, water, radio, extra tire(s), etc
    8. cellphones and chargers, walkie talkies, camera, radio.
    9. A survival kit including the previous mentioned items, but in smaller doses.

Remember to give someone a map ( you can get free maps from terraserver usa) of where you'll be staying and for how long incase you get lost. Also find a spot about 25yards away from a water source incase it floods and incase you have to crawl to get water. Also check around for signs of people and keep your distance from both strangers and large animals.

  5. Remember the 10-Essentials and you will have good guide for planning a camping trip:

    1. A Map of the area
    2. Compass
    3. Extra Clothing
    4. Extra Food
    5. Strike Anywhere Matches
    6. Fire Starter (when lit it will provide a consistent flame which can be used to start a campfire)
    7. Flashlight w/extra batteries & bulb
    8. Sunglasses
    9. First Aid Kit
    10. Pocket Knife/Camp Tools

With the 10 essentials taken care of, you can then plan the rest of the outing.

While not on the 10 essentials list, my "nice to haves" are a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and a camp pillow. For car camping I like to bring my Coleman 2-burner stove, Propane Lantern, and dutch oven & Charcoal briquettes. When backpacking I ditch the lantern, dutch oven and coleman stove and bring my MSR Pocket Rocket and a lightweight cook kit.

  7. Kabar, canteen, backpack. all u need if u r hardcore. tents r bs. they make extra weight and r 4 panzies. make ur own shelter. takes 10 min. also bring food, chair, tarp, and a portable toilet if ur a panzie. Cans r too heavy. use mres instead. I take 1 or 2 cause I can live on one of them for a day.
Deoderant is too much space. u smell like shit, but it makes everything lighter. If u don't need it to live or save ur life, than u shouldn't carry it. carry condoms (in case ur bf comming) for portable gloves for ur fingers in case of emergency. Im a survivalist, I go with my SEAL friends on their survival trips.

Oviously, boone V has never done this stuff before. No not take weapons. Multitools r shit. Ive been in cuba b4 on a trip. dove in. don't ask. I did't take weapons when i went to communist islands in SA. Just take hooks and fishing wire.
